Steve Gregor Smashes Guiness World Record!
by stevegregor on Dec.29, 2010, under FMX
Well crew, we did it!
On Friday October 29th 2010 at 7pm I smashed the Guiness World Record for the longest stoppie (front wheel wheelie) on a dirt bike. Though we did spend many weeks organising to make my attempt official, we were let down last minute by the Guiness World Record headquarters and were forced to make this an ‘unofficial’ world record. This was definitely a hard pill to swallow as it is a childhood dream of mine to have that certificate hanging on my wall, but the fact that I beat the record by such a convincing amount made me feel like I didn’t need any Guiness officials there!
The current world record was set at 188ft in 2008 by American Andy Bell during a Nitro Circus fiming session. I have to point out, Andy is a personal hero of mine and is ten times more talented than myself – I don’t think it will be too long before he shows me how it’s really done and shatters my record!
The morning of the record attempt I met with the TV1 ‘Breakfast’ show to do a live stoppie for the cameras following a quick interview. I managed to drink an entire can of Demon live on air during the interview! The footage is funny as hell, check it out here… http://tvnz.co.nz/breakfast-news/motorbike-stoppie-record-attempt-3-10-video-3864252.
Naturally, it rained all day leading up to the attempt, and I was adament I wanted to do this on a completely stock standard dirt bike. For those of you who dont know, trying to get knobbie dirt tyres to stick to wet asphalt at 130kph is nearly impossible! But after a few short attempts I was able to crack the 200ft mark and lay it down at 206ft 8in, breaking the world record by over 18ft!
A huge thanks goes out to everybody who played a part in making this record happen: Sportzone Suzuki for supplying the bike, Demon Energy for powering the attempt, Arai helmets for keeping me safe, Gaz my awesome mechanic and of course my boys Bung, Matt, Johnny, Kris and Hayden for doing all the measurements etc.
Considering I hadnt touched a dirt bike for over 18 months leading up to this attempt, im pretty pumped!
I’ll sit back and wait for someone to beat my record (which wont take long I think) and then I’ll hook up with Guiness again and get it all done officially next time.
